Crane Truck Maintenance
Crane trucks are a type of crane mounted on a truck chassis. While crane trucks don’t have the raw power of a static crane, they make up for it by being far more mobile. Of course, crane trucks need regular maintenance in order to function properly. This guide from the expert at KA Commercial Trucks can tell you more about how to maintain your crane truck.
Alignment
Cranes can become misaligned through repeated usage. You may notice the crane making the load sound while in operation and starting to lean to one side or the other. Misalignment is a serious problem since it can cause premature wearing in the motor drives and even tipping. Checking the alignment should be a part of your regular crane inspection.
Chains and Hook
Crane chains are designed to withstand years of lifting heavy loads before needing to be replaced. However, you should still inspect your crane’s chains every once in a while to check for damage, wear and tear, and corrosion. The chain connections and joins need to be cleaned and lubricated at least once a year. Have the operator document the chain’s condition on a monthly basis. Inspect the hook as well, and replace it if it becomes too bent to be usable.
Air and Hydraulic Systems
Most crane trucks have an internal air and hydraulic systems used to make moving heavy loads easier. As with all your crane’s systems, they need to be carefully monitored and maintained to ensure safe operation.
Wheels
A crane truck’s wheels bear the weight of the vehicle, crane, and whatever the crane is lifting. It’s no surprise that these wheels are often quick to wear out. Inspect your crane truck’s wheels for wear and tear when necessary. Keep them within the manufacturer’s recommended pressure range as much as possible.
Lubricants
Lubricants help a truck crane’s components to glide against each other rather than rubbing or scraping. Make sure that the gearbox, hydraulic brake actuator, open gear, bearing, gear coupling, bolts, joints, and wire rope are all properly lubricated. Different parts often require different lubricants, so check your owner’s manual for advice. Some lubricants will need to be swapped out depending on whether conditions are hot or cold, so keep your eye on the weather report.
